This poem recalls a sight I saw
while passing through Berwick-upon-Tweed, while travelling en route to
Edinburgh in 2005. I think I was struck by the fact that swans are usually seen
in pairs, but this one was quite alone.
A white swan,
sitting on a
wintry mudbank.
