Silent cinema from the first
golden age of Hollywood is for me somehow far more evocative of seeing seemingly-directly
into the distant past than the ‘talkies’ which superseded them only a decade or
so later. It’s hard to imagine now what it must have been like to see these silent
motion pictures when they were new. For me, talking pictures seem to be an
entirely different medium. I used to love watching the silent comedies of
Harold Lloyd when I was a kid. It wasn’t until much later, when I discovered
the irresistible allure and intrigue found in the films of Fritz Lang and G.W.
Pabst that I discovered the full breadth and remarkable depth of silent cinema.
