Kiyochika - Fireflies on the Kinu River (c.1930s)
This poem is about a time when I
stayed at a ryokan in Izu, where the writer, Yasunari Kawabata, used to stay. Late in the evening we ventured out, dressed in
yukata, to see the fireflies. The innkeepers gave us a paper lantern with a
candle in it to help us find our way.
A yellow paper moon
pooling light upon
our homeward path.
