This poem will probably only
make sense to those who have read Mikhail Lermontov’s ‘A Hero of Our Time’
(1840). A masterful story of a Byronic hero, Grigory Alexandrovich Pechorin. If
you’ve not read it, I highly recommend this classic work of Russian Romanticism.
It’s one of those books, a keystone in my reading life, which I revisit every
few years.
